Division Descriptions

Bainbridge Island Little League Baseball Divisions

Bainbridge Island Little League offers opportunities to play for kids ages 4-16 across 12 divisions. Divisions are based on the Little League Age Chart and are as follows:

 

Tee Ball
For ages 4 to 6


- Introduction to bat and ball sports (baseball and softball)…focused on teaching and fun.
- No scores kept, no umpires
- The more parent and volunteer coaches the better
Team selection can incorporate friend requests
We try to keep team roster sizes under 12 players, but can only do this with sufficient volunteer Managers/Head Coach and Assistant Coaches

- Teams typically have one or two evening practices per week on a week night
- Teams typically have one game per week on Saturday 
- Games are typically played at Strawberry Hill Park or Battle Point Park
- Practice and game schedules are typically released in March once teams are formed and coaches provide their availability

Typical skill level: Players still learning simple baseball rules and how to catch, throw, hit, and run the bases.

Uniforms
- Each player will receive a team jersey and hat
- Please have your child wear baseball pants or sweats (jeans or cargo pants are discouraged as they limit flexibility)
- Each player should wear their own glove (email [email protected] if you're in need of a glove as we may have some spares)
- If you need cleats, there is a used cleat locker at the Parks Department. Please call Parks @ 206-842-2306 to inquire.




“A" Baseball
For ages 6 (with previous Tee ball experience) and 7


- Coach-pitch
- Defensive positions, outs, and innings
- If outs are not made, teams bat through the lineup
- No umpires, scores are not reported 
Team selection by Player Agent Placement but can incorporate a friend request

- Teams typically have one or two evening practices per week on a week night
- Teams typically have one or two games per week on Saturday and/or a week night
- Practice and game schedules are typically released in March once teams are formed and coaches provide their availability

Typical skill level: Can make contact with a pitched ball some of the time. Can throw and catch the ball, but only inconsistently. Simple baseball rules and positioning are understood.

Uniforms
- Each player will receive a team jersey and hat
- Please have your child wear baseball pants or sweats (jeans or cargo pants are discouraged as they limit flexibility)

“AA” Baseball
For age 7 (with previous A ball experience), 8, and first time age 9 players


- Hybrid kid/coach pitch
- No walks allowed, coach pitches after player throws 4 balls
- Umpire will call balls/strikes from behind the plate.
- When coaches umpire, they will call balls/strikes from behind the mound
- Team placement by Player Agent after player assessment day (known as “Show Your Stuff”); friend requests are not accommodated

- Competitive. Individual game scores will be kept, with overall standings during the regular season and a league playoff to determine the AA Champion.

Teams typically have two evening practices per week on week nights
- Teams typically have two games per week on Saturday and a week night
- Games are typically played at Hidden Cove Ballfields or Rotary Park
- Practice and game schedules are typically released in March once teams are formed and coaches provide their availability

Typical skill level: More consistent ability to catch thrown balls, field grounders and catch easy pop ups. Ability to throw ball accurately to designated target at reasonable distances. (2nd to 1st; and SS to 1st are good tests). Clear understanding of basic defensive situations and where to play the ball. Players should be able to bat off Coach Pitch pitches majority of the time; and hit off kid pitches in strike zone some of the time.

“AAA” Baseball
For ages 9, 10, and first year 11 year old players


- 100% kid-pitch
- Playing times can be unequal, though Little League minimum play is enforced
- Defensive positioning becomes more specialized; not all kids get to play all positions
- Players at this level may be eligible for 8-10 year old All-Star team participation.
- Home Plate umpires may be available, but parents/coaches are often needed to call balls and strikes from behind the mound
- Team placement by the Player Agent after player assessment day (known as “Show Your Stuff”); friend requests are not accommodated.

- Competitive. Individual game scores will be kept, with overall standings during the regular season and a league playoff to determine the AAA Champion.

Teams typically have two evening practices per week on week nights
- Teams typically have two games per week on Saturday and a week night
- Games are typically played at Hidden Cove Ballfields or Rotary Park
- Practice and game schedules are typically released in March once teams are formed and coaches provide their availability

Typical skill level: Consistent ability to throw and catch, can hit an easy pitch most of the time, hitting balls to the outfield more often. Pitchers can throw strikes ~50% of the time. Steals are allowed. Players have an increased baseball awareness of more complex situations.

- Each player should wear their own glove (email [email protected] if you're in need of a glove as we may have some spares)

Majors Baseball
For ages 11 and 12


- Team selection by Manager draft after player assessments (known as “Show Your Stuff”)
- 10 year old players with previous AAA experience can only participate in Majors if they are selected in the draft
- All 11-12 players must play in this division to qualify for All Stars
- Playing times can be unequal, though Little League minimum play is enforced
- Defensive positioning becomes more specialized; not all kids get to play all positions
- Home Plate and Field Umpires available

- Competitive. Individual game scores will be kept, with overall standings during the regular season and a league playoff to determine the Majors League Champion.

Teams typically have two evening practices per week
- Teams typically have two games per week on any day but Sunday
- Games are typically played at Rotary Park
- Practice and game schedules are typically released in March once teams are formed and coaches provide their availability

Typical skill level: Can make routine infield and outfield plays, pitchers can throw 50+ MPH with increasing accuracy and some are throwing breaking balls. Some batters are able to hit balls with tremendous force and some are able to hit home runs over the fence. Players understand baseball situations usually without adult guidance.

Intermediate 50/70 Baseball
For age 13


- 50-foot pitching distance and 70-foot base paths.

- No tryouts needed; usually 1 team is formed per season.

- Many of the Junior League rules are used such as runners being permitted to lead off bases, runners may attempt to steal at any time, and allowing an on-deck batter.

- The emphasis remains on fun and fair play, with continued development of fundamental skills along with the mental aspects of baseball the players will need to compete at this higher level.

- The games will be scheduled across Kitsap County against other Little Leagues in the District 2 Area.

- The local league has an option to enter the team in the International Tournament.


Junior Baseball
For ages 13 & 14


- Conventional 90-foot diamond with a pitching distance of 60 feet, 6 inches. Modified diamond dimensions may be used during the regular season.

- No tryouts needed; usually 1 team is formed per season.

- Runners are permitted to lead off bases, runners may attempt to steal at any time, and on-deck batters are allowed.

- The games will be scheduled across Kitsap County against other Little Leagues in the District 2 Area (e.g. North Kitsap, Port Orchard, etc.) with 16 games as the normal season. 

- BILL will explore scheduling games to generally occur on weekday evenings or games will be scheduled as doubleheaders on Saturday and/or Sunday.  Generally 2 practices a week during the season.

- Team may be combined with Senior Baseball.

- The local league has an option to enter the team in the International Tournament.



Senior Baseball
For ages 15-16


- Conventional 90-foot diamond with a pitching distance of 60 feet, 6 inches. Modified diamond dimensions may be used during the regular season.

- No tryouts needed; usually 1 team is formed per season.

- Runners are permitted to lead off bases, runners may attempt to steal at any time, and on-deck batters are allowed.

- The games will be scheduled across Kitsap County against other Little Leagues in the District 2 Area (e.g. North Kitsap, Port Orchard, etc.) with 16 games as the normal season. 

- BILL will explore scheduling games to generally occur on weekday evenings or games will be scheduled as doubleheaders on Saturday and/or Sunday.  Generally 2 practices a week during the season.

- Team may be combined with Junior Baseball.

- The local league has an option to enter the team in the International Tournament.




Challenger Division

The Challenger Division was established in 1989 as a separate division of Little League Baseball to enable boys and girls with physical and mental challenges, ages 5 to 22, to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide.  Bainbridge Island Little League is proud to include and support our Challenger players. -Learn More
