Inclement Weather

Lightning and extreme heat are taken seriously. Managers and Umpires are responsible for pausing or cancelling activities when conditions become unsafe.

Detailed Safety & Medical Guidelines

Medical Release Forms

Managers and Coaches are required to keep a signed medical release form for every player on their roster. These forms allow medical personnel to provide timely care if a parent or guardian is not immediately available.

  • Each player must complete the official Little League Medical Release form.
  • Forms should be turned in to the Manager/Coach at the first practice.
  • The Manager/Coach should bring the forms to all practices, games, and team events so that they are available in the event of an emergency.

Concussion Safety & Protocol

While head injuries are uncommon, they must always be treated with caution. BILL follows the CDC’s “HEADS UP” guidance for youth sports.

Coach & Manager Requirements

  • All Managers and Coaches must complete approved concussion training every year.
  • Proof of completion may be requested by the league prior to the start of the season.

Recognizing a Possible Concussion

A concussion can occur with or without loss of consciousness. Watch for symptoms such as:

  • Headache, dizziness, or balance problems
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Confusion, difficulty remembering plays, or appearing “dazed”
  • Sensitivity to light or noise
  • Behavior or mood changes

What to Do

  • Remove the player from play immediately if a concussion is suspected.
  • Do not allow the player to return the same day, even if they say they feel better.
  • Recommend prompt evaluation by a qualified healthcare provider.
  • Require written medical clearance before the player returns to practices or games.

More information and training resources are available from the CDC:

How to Start a Claim

Inclement Weather (Lightning & Heat)

Lightning Safety

Lightning can strike miles away from the center of a storm. If thunder is heard or lightning is seen nearby, activities must be stopped and the fields cleared.

  • At the first sound of thunder or sight of lightning, suspend play and clear the field.
  • Move players, coaches, umpires, and spectators to safe shelter such as a vehicle or building (not dugouts or open structures).
  • Do not resume play until 30 minutes after the last observed lightning or thunder.
  • Players should remain with the team until play is officially cancelled or resumed so that everyone is accounted for during a delay.

Excessive Heat

Young athletes are more vulnerable to heat-related illness. Coaches should build in frequent breaks and monitor players closely on hot days.

  • Ensure players have access to plenty of water or sports drinks.
  • Provide shade in or near the dugout whenever possible.
  • Incorporate short cooling breaks between innings or during practice segments.
  • Watch for signs of heat stress (headache, dizziness, unusual fatigue, nausea) and remove affected players from activity immediately.
  • Consider shortening practices or rescheduling to cooler times of day when temperatures are extreme.
